Hoosac Tunnel
Hoosac Tunnel
The Hoosac Tunnel is the longest railroad tunnel in Massachusetts at 4.75 miles, and one of the longest tunnels in the United States. Built between 1851 and 1875 (though the eastern portal says 1877 - presumably the year when trains first traveled the route), it is now only used for a few freight trains a day. All the pictures are from the east portal - the west portal is much less accessible. (9 photos)

Mount Greylock Hike
Mount Greylock Hike
Hiking Mount Greylock - the highest peak in Massachusetts at 3,491 feet (1,064 m) - from the east along the Thunderbolt and Bellows Pipe trails. These trails double as ski slopes in the winter. While not a very long hike (less than 6 miles round trip), the ascent is very steep with an elevation gain of about 2300 ft. (18 photos)
